Barcelona, 2026. — The telephone tarot sector has a reputation for small print: prices discovered after hanging up, promises of guaranteed results and pressure to hire additional "work". Marta Tezanos (Selaya, Cantabria, 1971), a tarot reader in Barcelona since 1994, has decided to go in the opposite direction with a measure as simple as it is unusual: her first consultation is free, requested via WhatsApp and answered in a voice message, without ever asking for bank details.
"What convinces someone is not an advertisement, it is a well-made reading," explains Tezanos, who learned to read the cards by watching her grandmother at the kitchen table and worked night shifts for six years in a care home in Guinardó before dedicating herself to tarot. "I prefer to show my work rather than pay to say I am very good. And it works out cheaper for me."
The process is simple: the person writes their question via WhatsApp, Marta or one of the members of her small team lays out the cards—Tarot de Marseille, on the table, with no computer-generated software or random cards—and responds with an audio explaining what she sees, the good and what is not pleasant to hear. The limit is one consultation per person and one question, and the response usually arrives the same day and always within 24 hours.
The initiative also arrives with the rules that Tezanos has made her own during more than three decades in the profession: no charges for "love spells", rituals or work to make someone return ("anyone who charges you for a love spell is stealing from you", she often tells her clients); no exact dates are given, but rather cycles; and she does not read for people who have not requested the consultation. "The cards do not tell you what is going to happen. They tell you what you already know and do not dare to look at," she summarises with a phrase from her grandmother.
For those who want to go deeper, the telephone consultation maintains fixed prices that are visible before starting: 15 minutes for 8 euros, half an hour for 14 euros and an hour for 23 euros by card, with VAT included and a money-back guarantee if the person feels the consultation was not useful to them. Also available is the 806 008 335, the amount of which is charged to the phone bill from 0,42 euros per minute, without the need to provide bank details. The service operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and is intended for people over 18 years old.
Tezanos, who had an open consultation office on Calle Torrijos, in the Gràcia neighbourhood, until 2016, now attends only by phone: "Over the phone, people tell the truth sooner. Without the other person's face in front of me, I read the cards better, and I force myself to be more honest." With the free consultation via WhatsApp, her commitment to transparency is also put in writing: no small print, no subscriptions and no mandatory second consultation.
